This week's Saving Gaia
When corporation go green!
Let me bring you to Maldives, a beautiful country.
What is so speacial about there? They have Corals reefs, and they are man made, in order to save the corals. But why corals and why man made?
Facts!
Coral reefs are known as the rainforest of the ocean.2/3 of corals are dying. Coral reefs take a long time to grow. Mainly because corals reefs are sensitive to temperature change, with the climate changing this will greatly impact to the coral reefs. These corals reefs can also be a good attraction for tourist. By Restoring the coral island it will also attract tourists, but the next question we will be asking is fashion VS value. Half of the population of the coral reefs will die, within next 40 years.
Let me bring you back to Singapore!
The focus was on 2 major companies:
~Ricoh (sponsor for the programme)
~HP
~GE
Lets discuss about HP, many SP Environment club member should know about this, so i will jsut lay so i will jsut lay some facts. HP is a famous company known for computer accesories, ranging from computers, laptops, printers etc. What they have been doing is to collect used toner catridges, printers etc for recycling. With a short period their campaign seem to have work, they ahve collected a total of 10'000 e-waste and send it for proper recycling and disposal. To them, it is more on the value as compared to fashion. They have realise that if their products are not dispose in proper condition it will create a great impact on the environment.
Let me now bring you over to Ricoh.
Ricoh a sponsor for saving gaia, but this company do greater things than just sponsoring. Their office looks ordinary but extraordinary, with a closer look, there is no dustbin. This is a factor that pushes their employee to be more conscious about throwing paper. And of course printing of documents were taken into account, one has to report the uses for the printing, the highest printer will be given a a talk on the reduction of printing. RICOH live by the principle of 3Ps, PLANET, PEOPLE and PROFIT. Taking care of their people and planet is their responsibility and profit is of course importnant for most companies.
The reduction of paper, enable the company to reduce the amount of paper that is equal to 10 trees. This is their way of paying back to nature. On top of it they save nergy by lights off during lunch time and a selected day known as the eco day every month where employee has to Leave by 7pm to reduce electricity usage. This has prove effective on 14% reduction in energy usage. Though within1 month the saving are not much , but is the teaching to the staff that is worth more.
To talk about GE, let me bring you to India.
There are plentiful of cows(moo!) in india, a geat sourse of dairy products. But do you know the gas that is emitted by the cow dungs are 21 times more harmful!
Most dairy owners are on their wits end on how to dispose these dungs as they are acidic and can corrode items.
Supplying energy usage for 3200 million homes, GE has come out with 60kinds of ways to go green with the dungs. What they did was to ask the kind dairy owner to donate their dungs to a humongous dung bank. With that bank, the dungs undergoes fermentation in proper conditions, with that it supplys energy and in retun they are converted to fertilisers for the farmers. With these processes it had reduce 80% of the green hs gas.
But why cow dungs? The gaia has now limited resources, thus we need to think of new ways to use the things available, that is not only saving gaia, but saving ourselves too.
With eco management and green solutions, it will allow gaia breathe easier again.
One last fact:
The 4th highest carbon emission is paper production.
So what are you waiting for? Protest against exams, wahaha...jkjk...=X
